GILBERTO VELAZQUEZ - VOCALIST

Born in Puerto Rico, Gilberto Velázquez is a vocalist, actor, lyricist, and sonero who was raised in The Bronx. He has worked in multiple genres with a concentration in Latin music since his teenage years. In his earlier years, he worked as a background vocalist (corista) for many artists; however, he specializes as a lead singer in Latin music. He has been a featured vocalist in a multitude of bands & orchestras in which he has done international and national tours and he is the principle singer on various albums: Grupo Magia 1996 (Grupo Magia), Bailando Con Son Sublime 2006 (Son Sublime), Mi Tumbao Social 2009 and Machete 2020 (La Excelencia), A Su Propio Peso 2016 (Juaco Salsa), and Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow 2018 (The New Swing Sextet). Additionally, he was the lead singer for the house bands for New York restaurants Sofrito and Don Coqui from 2009-2015. Gilberto is proud to say that he produced and released his debut album titled La Verdadera Escena (2012) with Adan Perez that incorporates a fusion of different Latin music genres including Latin Jazz, Bolero, Salsa Urbana, etc., under his solo-artist name, DON SONERO.

From 2008-2010, Gilberto worked with music legend Paul Simon, and SHO’s Oscar Hernandez as a principal actor and vocalist for three renditions of Simon’s musical/concert versions of The Capeman. Other theatre credits include Game Over at The Bronx’s Pregones Theater (2008) and  PR Traveling Theatre’s off-Broadway musical I Like It Like That as “Juan” (November 2016 to January 2017). 

Gilberto enjoys being a collaborative musician on different musical endeavors he is currently participating in, including music therapy and various community and private events. He looks forward to working again with Oscar Hernandez with SHO.
